The airport was scheduled to open in July of this year, but due to various technical issues, the opening was pushed back to September. The old airport, located within the city limits, has passed the baton to the new one, and all flights have now been transferred to Techo .

The new airport covers 2,600 hectares and is located 20 kilometers south of the capital Phnom Penh. Getting to the city or the airport:
  • Taxi fare to/from the city: $15
  • Tuk-tuk fare to/from the city: $7.5
  • The Airport Express bus offers passengers rides to the airport (four stops: University of Health Sciences, Canadian Bank, Ministry of Social Affairs, Royal University of Economics and Law, Bred Bank, and AEON Mall Meachey). A ticket to the airport costs 1,500 riel (US$0.38).
  • In the future, an overground metro will be built and it will be possible to reach the city center.

This large-scale project, costing $1.5 billion, was implemented by Cambodia Airport Investment Co Ltd, a joint venture between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation. The airport is billed as the ninth largest in the world, a Level 4F airport, and will be able to accommodate long-haul transcontinental flights, including jumbo jets such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747, strengthening Cambodia’s position on the global stage.

The airport is a major air logistics hub, with construction scheduled to continue until 2030 , with phases 2, 3, and 4 to be completed in stages.

“Inspired by Cambodia’s history and cultural heritage, the terminal design is a contemporary embodiment of Cambodian culture. The terminal’s roof is an expression of lightness and modularity, serving as a symbolic gateway for every traveler.”

The airport’s design was inspired by the national traditions of an ancient civilization and adapted to the tropical climate within the framework of modern sustainable development trends. The single vaulted roof canopy is supported by structural supports reminiscent of tree trunks branching upward—a kind of metallic jungle. The supports are 36 meters high. This lightweight, openwork frame houses an innovative screen that filters daylight, creating uniform, diffused natural light during the day.

Why is it more than just an airport? Because the opening of major airports always signals a sharp rise in land, real estate, and business activity.

Techo International Airport is a key driver of economic growth and investment in Cambodia’s capital. For investors, it’s more than just an airport—it’s the heart of a new logistics zone where key growth indicators have already been predicted: population, land prices, residential and commercial real estate prices, and rental demand comparable to those of Asian capitals.
